Mohawk College is currently recruiting for our next
Building Services Technician
The Building Services Technician performs semi-skilled tasks, repairs,
maintenance and general upkeep to the exterior and interior of buildings,
grounds, furniture, and equipment at the College campuses. Provides
essential services and emergency response in case of floods, power failures,
fire alarms and other building emergencies. Performs grounds maintenance,
landscaping and snow removal duties. Performs moving and setup duties of
furniture in classrooms, offices and special events. Performs movement of
equipment and supplies throughout the College areas. Operates College
trucks and other vehicles. Performs delivery and pick-up of materials,
supplies and equipment to and from College campuses and external
organizations. Maintains inventory of office furniture and surplus or obsolete
equipment. Assists in maintaining a College environment that is safe,
aesthetic and in a functional state of operation.
This position will be cross trained to work at all campuses performing the
same responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:
Performs exterior maintenance and landscaping duties
• Operating and maintaining grounds equipment such as; mowers,
tractors, sprayers and spreaders.
• Seeding, resodding, pruning, planting, fertilizing, and pest and weed
control.
• Performing minor repairs to parking lots and walkways.
• Removing debris from grounds and parking lots (including broken glass).
• Monitoring parking lots for vandalism and security problems and relaying
appropriate information.
• Performing setups for special events and/or other functions.
• Assisting with the recycling program through waste pick-up.
Performs snow removal duties
• Operating and maintaining snow removal equipment such as; snow
blowers and tractors.
• Operating and maintaining sanding and salting equipment.
• Shovelling snow and clearing ice from sidewalks, steps, and building
entrances.
• Installs snow fences (NOTE: during the winter months (Nov. – April), the
incumbent is on call for snowstorm emergencies.
Performs general maintenance, moving of furniture and equipment,
and repairs to buildings
• Setting up classrooms and offices by interpreting sketches of furniture
layout and locating furniture accordingly; by monitoring rooms for proper
position of furniture as per floor plan and rearranging as required to suit
existing conditions; by moving furniture for special functions such as
convocations and receptions.
• Shipping, receiving and delivering materials and supplies within the
campuses and between campuses and teaching sites using college
vehicles.
• Operating forklift.
• Performs minor repairs to furniture.
• Installs cork/white/black boards, shelves/cupboards, cabinets, pictures,
plagues and projection screens.
• Performs patching, painting and varnishing.
• Installs and replaces ceiling tiles and tracking.
• Install various forms of signage.
• Performs clean-ups and minor roof repairs.
• Ordering and picking up supplies as required.
• Reports vandalism to Security and/or the Manager.
Events
• Supporting college events by setup/teardown of layouts, delivering
materials required for events to the venue(s) and supporting the
College’s events team in ensuring the smooth functioning of the event.
Inventory
• Maintain and document and up to date record of stock on hand, such as
office and classroom furniture and spare parts for repair/reuse. Use this
information for small repairs/moves within the team and make this
information available in the electronic form to the Planning team for their
use with college clients.
Performs other duties and assignments
• Performs maintenance and minor repairs to equipment and tractors.
• Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Manager, which
may include: loading and unloading truck; assembling shelving; hanging
pictures; repairing and maintaining draperies and accessories; minor
repairs to furniture; snow removal duties, including sanding, salting and
operating snow removal equipment; maintain a safe working
environment by keeping work areas clean; and storing materials and
supplies in an orderly manner.
• Maintains a safe and tidy work area.
• Assists other co-workers and trade workers as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful applicant must have:
• A two-year diploma in Construction Engineering Program, Building
Renovation Program, Landscape Technology Program, Ornamental
Horticulture Program or equivalent level of experience and education.
• Practical experience as a Building Services Technician and/or equivalent.
Practical experience performing furniture and equipment setups, general
maintenance tasks and driving delivery vehicles/moving trucks.
Experience driving tractors, skid steer, gators, ride-on mowers, forklifts,
and power sweepers.
• Valid Ontario Driver’s License (no points assigned under classification
system).
• Forklift Operating License and Propane Handlers Certificate.
• Having the following valid training: WHMIS/First Aid Certificate/Genie
(Lift) Training/Fall Arrest Training.
• Training in heavy equipment such as snow removal (farm tractors,
sidewalk tractors with blades and blowers).
• Training in workstation dismantling and installation.
• Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity,

effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees
and the community.
